Mitsubishi is keeping up the momentum that started with theLancer a few years ago and was sustained by the all-new Outlander last year. Now there’s an all-new Outlander Sport, an all-new model that is a completely different vehicle than the standard Outlander. It’s one class smaller, measuring 169.1 in. long. Some folks may recognize this Outlander Sport as the ASX, which Mitsubishi displayed in Geneva a couple of months ago. This same vehicle will also be marketed in Japan as the RVR.

While other markets will get a 1.8-liter inline-4, the U.S. version will be powered by a 2.0-liter inline-4 with MIVEC producing 148 bhp. The Outlander Sport is expected to weigh roughly 3000 lb., meaning it won’t exactly be quick, or a slouch. According to reports from Japan (where the RVR has already gone on sale), the Outlander Sport’s sturdy body structure has impressed many. The new Mitsubishi compact SUV is looking to take more sales away from the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, while going head to head against the likes of the all-new Nissan Juke also shown at the New York Auto Show.
Despite its entry-level SUV status, the Outlander Sport will be equipped with lots of standard features and will utilize key structural, aerodynamic and drivetrain technologies in averaging 31 mpg for the 2wd version. The vehicle will also be equipped with Mitsubishi’s electronically-controlled awd system, called AWC. Look for the new Outlander Sport to reach U.S dealerships this fall, priced below the $20,000 mark.
